Perspective

We have a rich history of traveling in our family. Karen grew up as a missionary kid in Venezuela and Colombia. Her parents’ work took them to most of the countries in South America during that time, and later to Russia, Latvia, and Canada. I grew up in a Navy family, moving up and down the east coast to different bases from which my father sailed to exotic ports all over Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Both of our families have impressive collections of 35mm slides documenting those travels.

Karen and I began our journey together with seven years in Germany, courtesy of the U.S.Army, the results of which were a cuckoo clock and two additions to the family. Well, four if you count the cats. We traveled through most of Europe during those years, hauling the boys along on trips to Italy and Belgium and the Netherlands. When we left the army, my first job was in California, near Los Angeles, which was almost like living in another country. :-) Philip was our souvenir from that part of our trek.

We like to travel.

When things suddenly go slow-motion…

Our 2001 trip to Venezuela was memorable for a lot of reasons besides the opportunity to see Karen’s girlhood stomping grounds. We also had the chance to tour all over the country. We played on the beaches off Chichiriviche, visited family friends in Caracas, and headed up into the mountains around Merida. The stay in Merida holds some particularly vivid memories. Read more »

Little League

When I left the army and we moved to California for my first civilian job, Gerrit was 5 and Tucker was about 3. We ended up living there for about two and a half years, and during that time the boys started participating in sports. Since we were living in southern California, the usual thing was to be part of a swim team. It seemed like a great fit and we all had a great time with it.

When we moved to Alabama it became obvious that we were woefully misguided.

I’m not sure if it’s true everywhere in Alabama, but in the Huntsville area baseball is the thing. You can start your kids off with t-ball when they’re 4. At 6 they move up to coach-pitch, and then at 8 they start kid-pitch. Somewhere along the line we parents are apparently supposed to start evaluating their chances of getting a college scholarship and ultimately going pro. This is so you can decide whether to pull them from park ball and join a travel team. Judging from the other parents, it’s very important to have this all planned out.

Welcome!

This blog is a collection of tales from our adventure of raising three sons. Most of these stories have long since passed into our family lore; they’re the ones that seem to come up again and again when we’re gathered around a common table. They involve things like Loaded Omelet Biscuits, wooden spoons, donut days, monsters, push-ups, secret hand signs, and much more.

Many of the stories involve good ideas we picked up through the years, mostly from other parents (our own included), which we then adapted for our own uses. It’s my hope that you’ll be able to do the same with some of them, or at the very least have a chuckle at our expense.

When I originally started posting these stories, I had no idea how long the whole thing was going to last. Now it seems that we’ve exhausted the tales worth telling about the raising of our men so it will be up to the next generation to continue the tale. Since the collection seems to be complete, I have rearranged the blogs so they can be more easily read in order, though I’ve noted the original posting dates for each.

We’re really glad you’re here! We even added a leaf to the table and put on a pot of coffee for your visit, so pull up a chair and enjoy the ride. We sure did.
